Independent filmmaker JT Mollner, who is also the producer of the film “Strange Darling,” gives us his first in depth interview regarding the journey on his most recent project. The film ‘Strange Darling’ employs an interesting approach to the issue of sexuality and identity: it intends, nevertheless, to address issues of trauma. Mollner made the characters and their relationships based on real-life people that he and some of his close friends knew. As a writer and a director, he would simply go out of his way to try and tell it in the most sincere way possible.
The independent filmmaker seems to have a clear understanding that producing an independent film can suffer severe logistical and budgetary restrictions which he did address by stressing the need to pull a good cast and crew. If monetarily constrained, Mollner’s belief in making the film did not get compromised and there was the need to simulate realism in the access that the characters had at the film more so their avenging actions.
“Strange Darling’ has received a variety of responses from the critics. Some have praised the film for its sheer artistry and originality, and there are those who have a completely opposite view, criticizing the work for its violence. Still, the film has garnered a loyal audience, who enjoyed the picture’s daring take and strong acting.”
Mollner’s thoughts on the film’s production are also very interesting and represent the typical ideals of independent cinema. We get through his interview with hopefully enlightening content, for both the fans of the film and of cinema itself. The themes are further explained as well, as the obstacles in adapting such an intimate narrative to the movable images are being elaborated upon.
Outside the art of the camera, Mollner is a musician and writer as well. He put out a few albums and published a book with short stories. At the moment, he is at the very first stages of working on the brand new movie and states that the shooting for it will take place soon.
