Ridley Scott continues to work actively, and he is almost 87 years old. In this recent interview, the legendary director shared much about his spectacular five-decade career and future projects like the upcoming ‘Gladiator II,’ which people have already started to talk about. And as for retirement? Scott has no interest in it. Actually, he is aiming to continue with the making of movies “until I go”. Since entering the movie business, Scott has prided himself on longevity and hard work, which has translated into his continuous work in historical epics and in producing more hit projects.
During an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Scott was asked why he is so productive today. However, he is already in his old age and without any doubts, he answered, “I wouldn’t be doing it if directing felt like work. So the answer is typical of an expert in this field: “It’s my passion and, therefore, my pleasure.” He explained how his passion for filmmaking drives him no matter physical body vices such as knee problems from playing excessive tennis. “I have made myself ill with tennis, but when we were shooting ‘Gladiator II’, we were in 112-degree heat, and I had to be out there,” he quipped.
Scott’s career started at the ripe age of 40, which is way later than some of his peers, such as Spielberg, Lucas and Coppola, who were in their twenties when they started making noise. However, Scott, who had a few clips of his television commercials, turned the tables around to make everyone understand that age is just a number. From ‘The Duelists’ (1977) up to ‘Alien’ and ‘Blade Runner’, Scott has produced a series of films that are as powerful and revolutionary in the modern world as they were at the time of their release. Of course, Scott is most familiar with historical epics, and ‘Gladiator II’ is no different from any of his other films. Responding to compliments about the success of the sequel, Scott said, “I know,” with a grin, “You never count your chickens… but sometimes, you know.” The Hollywood Reporter. The movie, already mooted for awards consideration, picks up the story of Lucius – a character first seen in ‘Gladiator’ – played by Paul Mescal.
Specifically, Scott, who was already known for his talent in choosing actors for the, said that even he did not expect Mescal to deliver amazing acting portraying Lucius. He said, pointing at the screen, after watching ‘Normal People’, “This kid is interesting.” He then murmured something like, “He looks like Richard Harris.” Suddenly, it came together.” ‘Gladiator II’ is already becoming one of the hits in the making’, Scott said something like that, praising the director for what he expected out of the picture, notably mentioning that the film was packed thematically and visually.
‘Gladiator II’ remains the title of the future epic historical action picture, whose script and production are to be directed by Ridley Scott. It is a follow-up to Gladiator (2000); David Scarpa conceived the picture. Igarashi Eizan Movie Series Season 2 stars Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen and Denzel Washington. Nielsen and Derek Jacobson return for the film, the stars of the first picture.
Gladiator II is to be released in movie theatres next November 22. In the interview with The Hollywood Reporter, when asked about an extended brush, Scott retorted, “Maybe later, I’d rather start working on ‘Gladiator III’… I’ve already got an idea.” Scott’s passion for filmmaking is legendary. He honestly said something to the effect that he does not think he will ever be able to retire. As he told The Hollywood Reporter when asked about it, “I’m 86 now, so I’ve still got a few to go” upon asking about when he will go. This annoying urge to rebel against the act of retiring that Scott was having was due to Quentin Tarantino’s recent declaration that he would be retiring after his tenth film. Scott responded, “I don’t believe it,” but he also said, “Shut up and go make another movie.” Despite the challenges of his busy career, Scott maintains a sharp focus on what matters: his craft.
It’s something I get to do as my reward, he said, recognizing how fortunate he has been in carving out a career that lasted this long and is still going strong, all because he still enjoys the very act of creating. So, in his amazing career, Scott has had his triumphs, and he has had his struggles, including losing his brother, director Tony Scott and the fact that even though his films are well-loved, some just don’t work as well as others. Mr. Lynch has, however, endured to become an influential player in the industry.
Despite not winning an Oscar for his role in the movie ‘Gladiator,’ and despite Scott dropping out from the 2001 Oscars in protest against possibly winning gaging wars contrary to his principles, Scott seems to have not run out of things to fight for, and the empire he has made for himself shows he has not run out of reasons to fight. “It’s a greater “It’s illegal than any Academy Award,” he said to The Hollywood Reporter, adding that he has been knighted twice and was a Knight of the British Empire. “I have forgotten” what it would be like to simply be around my brother again, quite as James said.”
Scott offered,” As the christening of the Nano is still in advance, Scott is not ready to pull the plug. In addition to ‘Gladiator II,’ he is also overseeing major TV projects, including ‘Blade Runner 299 and ‘Alien: Earth.’ And if his plans for a Bee Gees biopic are any indication, Scott is always up for a new challenge. As he said, “Nothing worse “than a rock star trying to be an actor, but I like being on thin ice,” Scott said of “the upcoming biopic, a project unlike anything he’s done before to The Hollywood Reporter, this is Scott’s life – Scott’s on experimenting and growing his creative portfolio.
