Maria Callas’ movie, by Chilean director Pablo Larrain, was shown in Toronto on Sunday, following the film’s world premiere in Venice.

Angelina Jolie believes that Maria, the latest picture with her participation, in which she appears as the world’s most famous opera singer, has been focused on the drama of an artist and their inability to work.

“At the end, she had highs, and the greatest highs were when she could feel she was connecting, and she had periods where she felt she couldn’t and it depressed her, and she felt like she cannot connect anymore,” Jolie said while presenting a private screening at the Toronto Film Festival on Sunday.

As a textured narrative of the biopic, Pablo Larrain’s Maria retraces the volatile, passionate, and tragic arc of the world’s most famous opera singer in Paris in the 1970s as she revisits and restages her life in the film in its final moments.

During the introduction of her new film, Ms. Jolie said that Callas was dead at the time of ‘darker times in her life.’ The lead of this movie thus addressed the Toronto audience and media screening because ‘she deserves to have you here to listen and know more about her life and feel with those who cherish art.’

Netflix bought Larrain’s Maria before the movie’s world premiere at the Venice Film Festival on August 29. After his debut at the Lido and Toronto Screening, he will be available on the streaming site, although the release date is yet to be determined.
