Alicia Silverstone, a highly publicized actress and environmentalist, has partnered with online marketplace eBay to heighten the appeal of pre-loved re-commerce, an initiative currently underway to encourage buyers to make second-hand goods the new mainstream sustainable shopping choice. Having been a stalwart in acting involvement for environmental causes for nearly three decades, Silverstone has, within the past year, also broadened her advocacy for the rewards of buying and selling second-hand items. Cooperating with eBay, she will emphasize and focus on highlighting the fact that re-commerce can be a giant key in cutting down environmental impacts.
Sustainable Fashion Advocacy
Silverstone, after her popular 1995 cult classic Clueless, has made her popularity an advocacy for sustainability and mindful consumption. Actress Alicia Silverstone addressed an eBay event, speaking on how the fashion industry has been the first suspect for environmental disasters-rubbish and overconsumption included, for a pretty long time already. She called on consumers to rethink their shopping if they would save themselves through second-hand first.
“I am a passionate environmentalist who feels very keen on waste minimization. So, re-commerce is, therefore, a tremendous step in that direction,” Silverstone said.
Role of eBay in Re-commerce
eBay, on its part, has also been a long-time proponent of the circular economy as a method of reminding users to purchase and sell previously owned items through the platform. An aspect that aligns well with the vision of Silverstone is sustainability. Within the period last year, the users of the site bought and sold nearly 7 million second-hand items through eBay-a number that can only put them closer to reducing the carbon footprint usually associated with newly supplied commodities.
“Re-commerce is more than just saving money; it’s saving the planet,” said eBay representative Sarah Barnett. “We are excited to have Alicia Silverstone as a partner to take the message further on why re-commerce is great for the environment. Together, we can inspire more people to make sustainable choices in their everyday lives.”
The Pre-Loved Revolution
Alicia Silverstone joins eBay at the same moment that the re-commerce wave starts picking up pace especially now that consumers are apprised of how fast fashion and over-consumption are ruining the earth. Silverstone, therefore, is helping to drive that discussion on how we can make a difference based on our purchases through buying pre-loved and then reselling through this vintage purchase. Through this collaboration with Silverstone, it only goes to show how conscious living and choices, for that matter, significantly affect the environment as well as society at large.
