Halsey channeled Freaky Friday‘s Pink Slip at the 2024 MTV Video Music Awards.
On Wednesday, Sept. 11, the pop star, 29 (who uses she/they pronouns), performed at the UBS Arena in New York and premiered their new song “Ego. ”
During the first verse, Halsey came out wearing a white collared shirt, black tie, oversized denim shorts, and black laced boots and started the performance on a bicycle behind a garage with a band, singing the pop-punk track. Fundamentals include Halsey vocals, while Victoria De Angelis played bass from Måneskin.
“I believe in your power, and I should try to kill my ego / ‘Cause if I don’t, my ego might kill me,” Halsey performed with some guitar play. “I’m not as young as I used to be, but sometimes I feel so helpless – I have been behaving like a baby lately.”
In the 2003 comedy movie ‘Freaky Friday,’ the main character, Lindsay Lohan, and her peers create an all-girl garage band playing Rock music. Last month, it was confirmed that Halsey would be performing at the VMAs along with Lenny Kravitz, Lisa, Benson Boone, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter, Camila Cabello, GloRilla, and Rauw Alejandro. On Friday, 6 September 2019, the “Without Me” singer dropped the new track “Ego” alongside the music video.
Directed and performed by the artists, the plot of the song’s visual is simple: there are two versions of Halsey, feminine and androgynous, who have dinner together, play the ‘killer’ game, chase each other around the house, and then actually try to kill each other. At the end of the video, the more feminine-looking Halsey is shown in the car’s back seat, choking her alter ego.
Halsey teased their fifth studio LP, The Great Impersonator, last month and released an eras-spanning trailer which declared that the project would be a “confessional concept album.”
