Famed actress reel winslett has done it again, starring in her latest film merely, which is the biopic of photographer lee miller, this time around as one of the incredible women in history. And in another interview, she shared that the time period was really difficult for Miller, both for being a woman and for being an artist.
Like many other creative women of her generation, Lee Miller became a struggling artist before she became successful. Lee miller was more than a photographer, she is also a war correspondent, a model, and a muse for a number of surrealists including Man Ray. Though her place among very few women war correspondents is very important, the road to reach there was anything but a smooth one. Lucky enough to play Miller in the film due to be released later this year, Winslet said how difficult it was for Miller.
“She battled quite a number of odds,” Winslet said. “From being a woman in the 20th century to being a reporter in the middle of war, Miller had to struggle throughout her life, and it wasn’t easy for a woman to be in those occupations.”
The heart of Miller’s story can be captured in a simple phrase – never sit down, never quit. In particular, she began as a model but quickly transformed into an artist and a photographer. As a war reporter for Vogue during the Second World War, she operated at the edge of perilous frontline spaces, where she covered the liberation of Holocaust camps and the aftermath of war in Europe.
Winslet praised the timeliness of Miller’s struggle, even today, in industries such as film and photography. “In her lifetime, the impact of her work was not fully comprehended, and despite the stereotypes, she fought all,” Winslet added. “But she was not defeated at any point.”
With direction by Ellen Kuras, Lee is going to focus on Miller’s great, if neglected, accomplishments in the fields of art and journalism. People have already started making a buzz about Winslet’s role because it’s very detailed and realistic, and it will return the inspiring story of Lee Miller to a new audience.
