Kyle Chandler Cast as Hal Jordan in DC Series ‘Lanterns’; James Gunn Welcomes Him to the DCU

The DC Universe is expanding, and a favorite of the fans is being welcomed into one of the most iconic roles it has to offer. The series Lanterns, exclusively for HBO Max, will feature Kyle Chandler, who rose to fame due to winning an Emmy as Coach Eric Taylor in the series Friday Night Lights. According to the news that set fans’ hearts ablaze with excitement, the project was confirmed by James Gunn, co-head of the DC Studios, who warmly welcomed Kyle Chandler to the growing DCU family.

Chandler is cast as Hal Jordan, the most known Green Lantern and DC Comics iconic character, in Lanterns. The series serves as a cornerstone to Gunn’s reimagined take on the DCU as Jordan and fellow Lantern John Stewart plot to outwit and solve a mysterious problem that will affect the universe. Casting Chandler will bring an experienced actor to the role, one who has made a reputation for great performances and a strong, powerful onscreen presence, perfect for the veteran space cop.

Gunn was vocal on social media about Chandler. “Kyle Chandler is Hal Jordan,” Gunn tweeted, saying that he cannot wait for fans to see the icon that Chandler will bring to life. Involvement of Gunn in the series is another indication of the stakes set high for Lanterns, as it is expected to connect directly with the larger DCU, including films and other TV series.

This is to be dubbed a “true detective-style” drama as it delves into the dirty underbelly of the Green Lantern Corps and their role as intergalactic law enforcers. Additionally, the show will delve into the personal lives of the Lanterns and give viewers a realistic account of the mental and moral conflicts that rile Hal Jordan and John Stewart as they try to protect the galaxy.

Fans have been keeping their fingers crossed for the proper introduction of Hal Jordan into the live-action DCU, following the 2011 botched rendering of the character by Ryan Reynolds in the Green Lantern film. With Chandler now in his role and Gunn at the creative helm, all eyes are on Lanterns for a dramatic, character-driven story true to the essence of the Green Lantern Corps legacy yet bold enough to evolve the landscape of the DCU.

Casting Kyle Chandler is already generating a lot of buzz as one of the biggest moves in DC’s increasingly vibrant universe. Lanterns is set to drop sometime in 2025 on HBO Max.
