U.S men’s soccer has appointed Mauricio Pochettino as the head coach of the national team in a historic move that was made on Wednesday.
“His record is evidence enough,” U.S Soccer Sporting Director Matt Crocker stated when Pochettino was hired this week. “He is right for the job to unlock the potential of individual players we have in our ranks,” said Crocker.
Based on the achievement granted by FIFA, the U. S. qualifies for the next World Cup since it will be the host nation. The problem with not many qualifying matches is that there are not enough games where Pochettino can have the team go up against an opponent where there is something to play for before the summer of 2026. The squad Pochettino is getting is a recent failure in Copa America, where the U S was in Crisis and could not qualify for the next round of the grouping.
In the last three teams that Pochettino managed, Chelsea, Paris Saint-Germain, and Tottenham, top talents of world football were part. Still, Pochettino thinks that all of that is still achievable, and he wants his players to provide a good-looking product on the field. “The aesthetic is very important, We want to play nice football, good football, exciting football, attacking football,” said Pochettino.
At Friday’s press conference, when asked why he took the latest position of the U. S. coach Pochettino said there is a challenge and potential. Starting at Tottenham Hotspur, Pochettino honed his soccer prowess by nurturing potential.
Pochettino invested approximately $542 million in players while at the Spurs in a period of five ½ years. But Manchester City, for instance, invested their resources worth more than a billion dollars at the same time. He also stated that the idea of perhaps giving previously uninformed players a chance would also be jetted to the U. S. men’s National Team.
Originally, some called Pochettino by his nickname, ‘Poch,’ after his stint with PSG, he went back to the English Premier League to manage Chelsea in the 2023/24 season.
But Pochettino is still gunning for the stars. Responding to host Roger Bennett of the ‘Men in Blazers’ podcast on what success means for the U. S. in the upcoming World Cup, Pochettino was clear. We were waiting to hear the response, and Pochettino replied in a confident tone, ‘We win the World Cup. ‘ “There is nothing wrong in big dreams such as dreaming that we are going to win the FIFA World Cup.”
