Tom Holland opens up about how Robert Downey Jr. helped save his first significant scene as Spiderman from the cutting room floor during Captain America: Civil War. In an interview on the Rich Roll Podcast, Holland recalled how extremely nervous he felt acting in a scene with Downy, with whom he portrayed Tony Stark/Iron Man in his 2016 début for Marvel as Peter Parker/Spiderman.
Holland said his screen test for the role was an eight-page scene with dialogue. For him, it went great, and he felt pretty confident right after the audition, especially his agent; he said, ‘Just memorize all the lines exactly.’ At that point, even during the shooting process, Downey began improvising such a line and began to add. Everybody, let’s shoot the whole thing from the audition.” You might want to have it more, but it’s always easier to cut it on the final day of editing.
The whole scene was shot through Downey’s intercession, and most parts were inserted into the episode. Interviewing reporters, Holland said he told Downey he hoped to give him the whole movie scene. He also said one word to consider was how much he would love to return the favor by helping out a young actor in a similar way, introducing the character of Miles Morales in the Marvel Cinematic Universe if he ever got the chance.
Nevertheless, in the same interview, he told the story of an amusing event connected with how he “drank the mini-bar dry the night before first screen test with Downy, which Marvel found out.
